Renata’s passion for dance has led her to explore other ethnic dances, which in turn has given her a diverse background in the field. In addition to Middle Eastern dance, Renata has also studied/performed Flamenco, both domestically and internationally, Khatak, Ballet, African, Tango, and Salsa. Since 2006 alone, she has been active in several different performing troupes: Salsa Barbara and Salsa Lolita (salsa dance troupes), Pyrospin (fire/dance fusion), Harem Hipnotica (tribal fusion belly dance) and Fishbone Productions (acting/dancing).
Renata is equally passionate about music as she is about dancing, She has been playing Middle Eastern percussion for 15 years, has studied Indian tablas, African drumming (Senegalese and Ewe), Flamenco percussion and is an accomplished trap set drummer.
Renata began singing Middle Eastern music in 1997 with the UCSB Middle Eastern Ensemble and has annually been invited to be a vocal soloist for their concerts. A small group of ensemble members decided to form their own group, ZAR, which performs locally in Santa Barbara at restaurants, private parties and weddings. She has also studied Persian, Flamenco, Western Classical, as well as Indian Dhrupad vocal techniques. She had the honor of performing with her Persian vocal teacher, Mamak Khadem at the SF Asian Art Museum in 2007. She also performs regularly with her Dhrupad teacher, Shanti Shivani. In 2006 she was one of the founding members of the band Derka as both a singer and percussionist), an improvisational African and Middle Eastern music group. Her main vocal influence and inspiration is Lisa Gerrard of Dead Can Dance.
Renata has recently relocated to NYC to expand her horizons as a performer and documentary filmmaker (her other life!).
